Goal

Seward needs a functional outdoor, public basketball court.

Our goal is to renovate the existing court in Forest Acres.

Our goal is to renovate the existing basketball/tennis court in the Forest Acres area, creating a safe, functional outdoor basketball court. Basketball is one of the most popular sports in America and it is accessible to everyone. All you need is a ball and a safe place to play. Unfortunately, there is very limited access to basketball courts in Seward. The high school gym is only open to students, and only when a staff member opens it. The AVTEC gym has a fee and has limited hours. There are a few outdoor hoops in Seward, however, they have many issues like uneven surfaces, a small area, and short, rusty rims. These issues make them less than ideal and in some cases even unsafe. Seward needs a functional outdoor, public basketball court. An outdoor, public court would benefit our community in many ways. Basketball is a sport that brings people from different cultures and backgrounds together and is a healthy activity for teens and young adults. A community court would be free and accessible to everyone in our community and draw visitors to our area. The location of the current basketball/tennis court in Forest Acres is ideal. With the new bike park in the area, there is a lot of traffic and interest in the area. There is a campground nearby so people camping would be able to utilize it. In addition, it is near the schools and neighborhoods giving kids easy access. Despite the prime location, this basketball/tennis court is currently uneven, dark, and in bad condition. It is uninviting, and unsafe due to the water that pools up on the uneven surface, cracks in the concrete, and rusty chains on the hoops. With some renovation, this court could be a safe, fun, inviting place for Seward community members and visitors to recreate.
